What can I expect in the free phone consultation?

Finding the right therapist is hard and can be intimidating. Many people don’t make the first appointment because they don’t want to be disappointed. The free phone consultation is designed so you can have a good idea BEFORE you make a commitment, have to go anywhere or pay anything so you can have a good idea if this is the right fit for you. The consultation will usually last anywhere from 10 – 20 minutes. You will have a chance to discuss what is going on, what you are looking for in therapy and we will detail a little about what the work will look like. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions. If it all seems like a good fit, we will schedule your first appointment at the end of the call.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. We are Psychotherapists and work to heal anxiety, depression, trauma, etc. naturally. If you are interested in medication we are happy to give you some good referrals for Psychiatrists. We work closely with Psychiatrists to ensure the best treatment for you.

What are differences between therapists, coaches, psychiatrists, etc?

There are many differences, here is a LINK to a blog I wrote that talks about some of them.

What are the prices?

Our prices range from $225 – $355.   We also offer package rates.

Do you have a sliding scale?

For a variety of beneficial reasons we offer package deals instead of sliding scale. You can ask more about this in your phone consultation.

How long does therapy usually take?

This depends in large part on you! The more you actively participate in your therapy, the more you will get out of it and the faster it will go. As an average, I like to target at least two months on a weekly basis. At this point, many people start to see changes, if not resolution. You and your therapist will reassess. It is important that you communicate with your therapist if you are feeling finished.

Does Insurance cover it?

We work with insurance as 3rd party providers. What this boils down to is that most PPO insurance plans will reimburse you for a portion of what you paid. We will provide a receipt at the end of every month that you will submit to your insurance for reimbursement. There are some PPO plans that only cover “in network” providers so it is best you call your insurance to check.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Just as your Health information is protected by HIPPA (Health Information Privacy Protection Act) so is your counseling. There are a few very extreme exceptions where your counselor is allowed or in many cases require by law to break your confidentiality. 1) If you report an imminentplan to hurt yourself or someone else. 2) If child or elderly abuse is disclosed. 3) In some (not all) cases of subpoena of records.

I’m having problems in my relationship / marriage, should I do individual counseling or couples counseling?

As Marriage & Family Therapists we lean toward working with the couple or the family and find it most effective if everyone is involved. There are many situations however where not everyone is interested in doing therapy. If this is your case, know that you can make dramatic change in ALL of you relationships by changing yourself.

What are the benefits of choosing a man vs a woman for therapy?

The first qualification you should look for is if you feel comfortable with your therapist. Studies show that regardless of age, gender or theoretical orientation the #1 predictor of effective therapy is a strong client / therapist relationship.

While the majority of men are masculine and women are feminine, some men may be more feminine and some women more masculine. When choosing a therapist if you tend to be more feminine, choosing a feminine therapist can be helpful to understand the things that you know and accept about yourself. Choosing the opposite can be helpful in that you will have the opportunity to have a clearer picture and better understanding of that which you don’t understand in others.

Choosing the same gender (or in many cases energetic gender – ie masculine / feminine) can offer certain connection and understanding of how you operate and what is happening for you. Choosing the opposite gender can allow you to align with the less known parts of yourself.
